In a recent interview with Famitsu on April 24, Sucker Punch unveiled exciting new insights into Ghost of Yotei, the standalone sequel to the acclaimed Ghost series. This follow-up to Ghost of Tsushima promises to elevate the gameplay and narrative with greater depth and player autonomy.

Creative Director Jason Cornell highlighted that Ghost of Yotei will offer unparalleled freedom in gameplay and feature the most expansive maps ever crafted by the studio. Instead of a linear path to the main objectives, Cornell stated, "Players can discover the whereabouts of the Yotei Six independently and choose their own approach to avenging them."

Last week, Sucker Punch announced the PS5 release date for Ghost of Yotei, accompanied by a trailer titled "The Onryō’s List." This trailer introduced fans to the protagonist Atsu and her quest for vengeance against the Yotei Six, showcasing both story elements and gameplay mechanics.

More Melee Weapons

In addition to enhanced exploration, Ghost of Yotei introduces greater variety in melee weaponry. Following fan speculation from the latest trailer, Creative Director Nate Fox confirmed that alongside the iconic samurai sword, players can wield an assortment of weapons including the odachi (Japanese long sword), a chain sickle, double swords, and a spear.

Fox emphasized the central role of the sword in gameplay but noted that other weapons can be mastered through interactions with various teachers and masters encountered throughout the game's expansive world.

He further explained that unlike its predecessor, where the samurai's honor was a key narrative element, Atsu's story does not revolve around samurai honor. This freedom allows her to employ any available weapon on the battlefield, such as picking up and throwing enemy weapons. Fox clarified, "However, this ability is limited to certain weapons. Not every enemy or weapon can be used this way, but if you can handle it, you're encouraged to do so."

Ezo as the Setting

Set in 1603 around Mt. Yotei in Ezo (modern-day Hokkaido), Ghost of Yotei explores a unique setting described by Cornell as "a stage that balances a lawless environment with no security yet and an environment where danger lurks in the beauty of nature."

The game also aims to represent the Ainu culture and its people, indigenous to Japan's northern regions. To ensure authenticity, the developers conducted extensive research in Hokkaido, visiting museums and consulting with experts on Ainu culture. Cornell was deeply moved by Hokkaido's stunning natural landscapes, inspiring the team to recreate this setting for players worldwide.

Following the success of Ghost of Tsushima, which was praised for its respectful portrayal of Japanese culture and history, Sucker Punch is committed to maintaining high standards with Ghost of Yotei, focusing on "the dangers lurking in the magnificent wilderness of Ezo."

Ghost of Yotei is scheduled to launch exclusively on the PlayStation 5 on October 2, 2025. Stay tuned for more updates and in-depth coverage on our website.
