Elden Ring Nightreign: No In-Game Messaging System

FromSoftware has confirmed that the highly anticipated Elden Ring Nightreign will not include an in-game messaging system, a staple feature of previous Soulsborne titles. This decision, according to game director Junya Ishizaki, is a practical one. The fast-paced, multiplayer-focused design of Nightreign, with anticipated play sessions of around 40 minutes, leaves insufficient time for players to effectively utilize the messaging system.

While this removes a beloved community aspect, Nightreign will retain and enhance other asynchronous features. The bloodstain mechanic, for example, will return, offering players even more insight into other players' deaths and the chance to loot their fallen forms.

FromSoftware's vision for Nightreign is a "compressed RPG," prioritizing intensity and multiplayer interaction. This focus on a more streamlined experience, coupled with the game's planned three-day structure, explains the omission of the messaging system. The goal is to maintain a consistently engaging experience with minimal downtime.

Nightreign, revealed at The Game Awards 2024, is currently slated for a 2025 release, though a specific date remains unannounced.
