Obsidian Entertainment's Avowed: A Development Journey Marked by a Radical Reboot

Bloomberg recently interviewed Carrie Patel, Avowed's second game director, revealing a tumultuous development process that resulted in the complete overhaul of two years of work. Initially, Obsidian envisioned Avowed as a blend of Destiny and Skyrim, combining a large-scale open world with cooperative multiplayer gameplay.

The 2020 teaser trailer generated considerable fan anticipation, yet it masked the game's far-from-complete state. A decision was made to scrap the entire project and begin again. The original trailer now serves as a reminder of a discarded prototype, vastly different from the final release.

Patel then took the reins as game director, fundamentally reshaping the project. She moved away from the Skyrim and Destiny influences, abandoning the open-world design and multiplayer aspects. Obsidian returned to its preferred zone-based structure, concentrating on a captivating single-player narrative deeply connected to the Pillars of Eternity lore.

This mid-development restart presented significant obstacles, comparable to filmmaking without a script. Teams worked diligently under uncertain circumstances as leadership solidified a unified vision. Despite these difficulties, development continued for another four years before Avowed's eventual launch.
