Hokkaido's Ghost of Yotei: Deadly Yet Breathtaking
Why Hokkaido Became Ghost of Yōtei's Central Setting
Sucker Punch reveals why their team selected Hokkaido as the primary location for Ghost of Yōtei. Discover how they're recreating Hokkaido's landscapes and their firsthand experiences traveling through Japan.
Capturing Authenticity in a Historical Setting
Ghost of Yōtei will authentically recreate real Japanese locations, with Ezo (modern-day Hokkaido) serving as its central setting. In a recent PlayStation Blog update, Sucker Punch Game Director Nate Fox detailed how the team selected Hokkaido as the backdrop for protagonist Atsu's journey.
This approach reflects Sucker Punch's established methodology - their first Ghost title meticulously brought Tsushima Island to life, earning acclaim from Japanese critics. Notably, Fox and Creative Director Jason Connell were appointed ambassadors of Tsushima for their cultural representation in the original game.
In 2021, Tsushima Mayor Naoki Hitakatsu commented: "Many Japanese citizens don't know Genko period history. Globally, Tsushima remains largely unknown. We're deeply grateful for how they've portrayed our story with stunning visuals and narrative depth."
The studio applies this same respectful approach to Ghost of Yōtei, aiming for what Fox describes as "authenticity and believability in our fictional narrative." Hokkaido was chosen because "its breathtaking scenery represented Japan's frontier in 1603" - the perfect stage for Atsu's revenge tale to unfold.
Nature's Duality: Scenic Beauty Meets Hidden Danger
Fox explains the team made two research trips to Japan, with Shiretoko National Park particularly influencing their vision. The location's stunning vistas contrasted with wildlife dangers created their desired tension between serenity and peril.
Mt. Yōtei (Machineshir to the Ainu people) became especially significant. The indigenous Ainu, with their deep spiritual connection to nature, regard the mountain as sacred. For the developers, it symbolizes both Hokkaido's essence and the family Atsu lost.
Fox notes their Japan visits - including interactions with local communities - helped them "capture Hokkaido's spirit in our fictional version." As non-native creators, they acknowledge gaps in their cultural understanding and plan to address this thoughtfully.
Ghost of Yōtei marks Sucker Punch's largest project to date, scheduled for PlayStation 5 exclusive release on October 2, 2025. For continued updates, follow our upcoming coverage.
