On Bloodborne’s 10th Birthday, and With Neither a Sequel nor a Next-Gen Update in Sight, Fans Once Again Organize a Return to Yharnam

Today marks the 10th anniversary of Bloodborne, and fans are celebrating by organizing another "Return to Yharnam" community event. FromSoftware's PlayStation 4 masterpiece, which launched on March 24, 2015, has solidified the Japanese developer's reputation as one of the greatest in the industry. The game received widespread critical and commercial success, leading many to anticipate a follow-up similar to the Dark Souls sequels.

However, a decade later, there has been no sequel, remaster, or even a next-gen update to bring Bloodborne to 60fps. Fans have persistently requested more from Sony, yet the silence from the company remains one of the most perplexing decisions in gaming.

Earlier this year, some insight was offered by PlayStation legend Shuhei Yoshida, who, after leaving Sony, shared his theory on the lack of Bloodborne updates. Speaking to Kinda Funny Games, Yoshida clarified that his views were personal opinions and not reflective of any internal Sony discussions. "Bloodborne has always been the most asked thing," Yoshida noted, "and people wonder why we haven’t really done anything, even an update or a remaster. Should be easy, right? The company is known for doing so many remasters, right, some people get frustrated."

Yoshida speculated that Hidetaka Miyazaki, the head of FromSoftware and creator of Bloodborne, may be the reason behind the lack of updates. "I have only my personal theory to that situation. I left first-party so I don’t know what’s going on, but my theory is, you know because I remember, you know, Miyazaki-san really, really loved Bloodborne, you know, what he created. So I think he is interested, but he’s so successful and he’s so busy, so he doesn’t want, he cannot do himself, but he does not want anyone else to touch it. So that’s my theory. And the PlayStation team respect his wish. So that’s my guess, right? Theory. I am not revealing any secret information, to be clear."

Miyazaki's success is undeniable, having led FromSoftware through the influential Dark Souls series and the recent mainstream hit, Elden Ring, which has seen further expansion with an upcoming multiplayer spin-off. Since Bloodborne's release, Miyazaki has directed Dark Souls 3, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and Elden Ring, keeping him occupied with numerous projects and the management of his company.

In interviews, Miyazaki has often sidestepped questions about Bloodborne, highlighting that FromSoftware does not own the IP. However, he did acknowledge last year that the game could benefit from being released on more modern hardware.

In the absence of official updates, modders have attempted to enhance the Bloodborne experience on the PS4. Notable efforts include Lance McDonald's 60fps mod, which was hit with a DMCA takedown from Sony four years after its release. Similarly, Lilith Walther's projects, such as Nightmare Kart and the Bloodborne PSX demake, faced copyright claims.

Recent advancements in PS4 emulation have allowed fans to experience Bloodborne at 60fps on PC, thanks to breakthroughs like ShadPS4, as detailed by Digital Foundry. This progress might have prompted Sony's aggressive response, although IGN's request for comment went unanswered.

With no official word from Sony, Bloodborne fans have taken matters into their own hands, organizing community events like the "Return to Yharnam" drive kicking off today. Participants are encouraged to create new characters, summon cooperators and invaders, and leave in-game messages indicating their involvement in the community event.

As fans continue to celebrate and engage with Bloodborne through these community-driven efforts, it remains to be seen if this will be the only way to experience new adventures in the haunting world of Yharnam.
