Larian CEO: Top Single-Player Games Still Thrive

Oct 12,25

One of gaming's longest-running debates has resurfaced: the question of whether major single-player games are dying. Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke, who led development on the critically acclaimed single-player hit Baldur's Gate 3, recently offered a definitive stance on the matter.

In a post on X/Twitter, Vincke observed it's "that annual moment when people declare the death of big single-player games." His response cut through: "Use your imagination. They're thriving. They just need to be quality experiences."

Vincke's expertise is undeniable. Larian meticulously built its reputation through exceptional CRPGs like Divinity: Original Sin and its sequel before successfully reviving the Baldur's Gate franchise with their universally praised third installment.

The CEO has consistently shared valuable industry perspectives, whether during his memorable Game Awards speeches or in interviews. He champions developer passion, mutual respect between creators and players, and genuine care for game quality. This makes his take on the enduring debate both expected and refreshing.

The current year already boasts significant single-player successes like Warhorse Studios' Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. With many months remaining, more single-player titles will undoubtedly emerge as standouts.

Meanwhile, Larian has chosen to move beyond Baldur's Gate 3 and Dungeons & Dragons to develop an entirely new intellectual property. Hasbro's SVP of digital games Dan Ayoub hinted to IGN at GDC that updates about the Baldur's Gate franchise's future may arrive sooner than expected.
