Civilization 7 Patch 1.0.1 Addresses Some of the Negative Feedback From Advanced Access

Mar 18,25

Firaxis Games, the developer behind Civilization VII, has released patch 1.0.1, hot on the heels of the strategy game's full launch. This follows an advanced access period that garnered mixed Steam reviews. The patch tackles several community concerns, primarily focusing on UI improvements, expanded map variety, and the addition of features expected by long-time fans.

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick, in an interview with IGN, acknowledged the negative feedback from both press and players. However, he expressed confidence that the established Civilization fanbase would appreciate the game more with continued play, describing the initial performance as "very encouraging."

Now available to all players, not just those with early access, patch 1.0.1 (for PC, Mac, Linux, and Steam Deck) is the first of several planned updates designed to address player feedback. The full patch notes are detailed below.

It’s important to note that cross-play multiplayer has been temporarily disabled to expedite PC updates. This means PC patches may be released at a different pace than console updates. However, Firaxis clarified that this will not affect console-to-console cross-play or PC-to-PC multiplayer.

Civilization VII 1.0.1 Patch Notes (February 10, 2025)

Gameplay (Windows PC/Mac/Linux/Steam Deck)

  • Fixed an issue causing shortened Ages in Epic and Marathon speed games.
  • City-States now become Friendly Independent Powers during Age Transitions instead of disappearing. They also start with more units in the Exploration and Modern Ages.
  • Resolved inconsistencies in Naval Combat:
    • Naval Units now use correct Combat Strength values when attacking other Naval Units.
    • Naval Units now receive proper reciprocal damage after attacking.
    • Naval Units move more consistently to the attacked tile after victory.
  • Completing a Legacy Path's final milestone no longer grants Modern Age progress, allowing more time for victory completion.
  • Towns automatically switch focus back to growth if their chosen focus is no longer eligible (e.g., population decrease).
  • The Future Civic is now repeatable in all Ages. The cost of Future Tech and Future Civics increases with each repetition.
  • Fixed an issue where excessive growth bonuses resulted in negative food requirements.
  • Improved Rail Networks, increasing the reliability of Settlements connecting to the network over water via Ports. This works if the Capital has a Port or is rail-connected to a settlement with a Port.
  • Improved the Antiquity Age Loyalty Crisis, including the ability to purchase Villas to manage settlement happiness.

A Note on Cross-Play Multiplayer: To expedite PC updates, patches may be released at a different pace than on consoles. Cross-play between PC and console players is temporarily disabled. This does not affect console-to-console or PC-to-PC multiplayer.

AI (Windows PC/Mac/Linux/Steam Deck)

  • AI offers high-value Cities less frequently during Peace Deals.
  • In the Modern Age, AI declares war less often at the start and considers Ideology more before declaring war or offering peace.
