Lies of P Director Explains Difficulty Tweaks for Wider Appeal

Nov 06,25

The upcoming Lies of P DLC, titled Overture, will for the first time introduce optional difficulty settings.

As a "Soulslike" title, Lies of P is known for its punishing challenge, which can be daunting for newcomers drawn to its dark narrative and world. Initially, Director Jiwon Choi stated the team believed Soulslike games should not include difficulty options, and the game launched without them.

It appears Neowiz has since reconsidered, confirming the decision was made after carefully reviewing player feedback.

“Our goal was to make the game accessible to a wider player base,” Choi explained to VGC. "We received substantial feedback from our community and our development team. By implementing adjustments and adding difficulty options, we can tailor the experience for different playstyles, which helps broaden our audience.”

This shift has sparked debate among players about the director's change of stance. One commenter suggested: "It's likely easier to initially resist changing difficulty than to face ongoing criticism, negative reviews, and constant discussions about accessibility. Adjusting the challenge allows more people to enjoy the game you created."

Another player shared: "I started gaming around age 24. I use easier settings because, while I love Lies of P, I acknowledge my skill level, and that's perfectly fine. I never had gaming systems as a child, so now as an adult with limited time to build reflexes, I appreciate the option."

"Some Souls veterans oppose difficulty options because they enjoy the prestige of overcoming extreme challenges. I'm glad Lies of P is prioritizing inclusivity over catering to that mindset," added another.

However, not all reactions are positive, as seen on Steam forums and social media.

"I was interested in playing, but after the nerfs and addition of difficulty levels, I lost interest. Developers should stop catering to less dedicated players," posted one user on the forums, though most replies in that thread support the developer's new approach.

Another wrote: "Neowiz, you had a masterpiece, and you've turned it into a joke. What a shame." A thread titled "Difficulty settings = Not playing" appears directly above a post from someone who tried the game and stated: "the difficulty is just unreasonable."

Lies of P presents a dark, unique reimagining of the Pinocchio tale, featuring challenging action and a distinctive "lie" system where choices dynamically influence the story. The new DLC expands the experience with new areas, enemies, bosses, characters, and weapons. It also introduces Death March, a new mode that lets players replay battles against all the game's bosses. Completion times for the DLC are estimated at 15-20 hours for seasoned players, unlocking after a specific chapter. A full sequel to Lies of P has also been announced.

Our review of Lies of P was positive; we gave it an 8/10, noting: "While Lies of P doesn't stray far from its Soulslike roots, it executes the formula with remarkable skill and polish."
