Antonov's career began in the mid-90s at Xatrix Entertainment (later Gray Matter Studios) in Los Angeles, after a background in transportation and advertising design. He rose to prominence as a key creative force behind Half-Life 2's iconic City 17, a design inspired by his childhood in Sofia, Bulgaria, and incorporating elements of Belgrade and St. Petersburg. He later contributed his visual design expertise to Dishonored at Arkane Studios, helping to shape the distinctive world of Dunwall. Beyond video games, Antonov also worked on animated films and with the indie studio Darewise Entertainment.
In a Reddit AMA from eight years prior, Antonov discussed his career path, explaining how the nascent video game industry offered a unique opportunity for creative risk-taking compared to his previous experiences in more established fields. He most recently appeared in Valve's 20th-anniversary documentary for Half-Life 2, reflecting on the inspirations behind his work.
