Jar of Sparks, NetEase-Backed Studio, Pauses First Game Project

Jerry Hook, former design lead on Halo Infinite, announced that his studio, Jar of Sparks, has temporarily halted development on its debut project. The studio, established in 2022 under the NetEase umbrella, aimed to deliver a "next-generation narrative-driven action game." However, Jar of Sparks is now actively seeking a new publishing partner to realize its creative vision.

NetEase, a global gaming giant, currently supports live-service titles such as Once Human and Marvel Rivals. The latter, launched to significant success, recently unveiled its Season 1 Battle Pass and is preparing for the addition of the Fantastic Four on January 10th. This contrasts with the current situation at Jar of Sparks.

Hook's LinkedIn post confirmed the development pause, emphasizing the studio's search for a partner capable of fully supporting their ambitious project. He expressed pride in the team's innovative work and bold creative risks.

Studio Transition and Future Plans

While layoffs weren't explicitly stated, Hook indicated that team members will be exploring new opportunities, and the studio will assist in finding them new roles in the coming weeks. This isn't NetEase's first collaboration with a veteran game developer; Hiroyuki Kobayashi, a former Resident Evil producer, also founded GPTRACK50 Studios under NetEase in 2022.

The news comes amidst a period of change for the Halo franchise, Hook's previous employer. Halo Infinite's post-launch reception and the Paramount+ series have faced criticism. However, 343 Industries' rebranding to Halo Studios and the shift to Unreal Engine for future titles suggest a potential resurgence for the franchise.

Jar of Sparks' temporary setback presents a contrast to NetEase's continued success with its live-service titles. The studio's future, and the fate of its first game, now hinges on securing a new publishing partner.
