Star Wars: Underworld scrapped over budget issues

The revelation hits hard: Former Star Wars prequel producer Rick McCallum recently disclosed that the legendary canceled series Star Wars: Underworld carried a staggering $40 million price tag per episode - essentially sealing its fate due to budget constraints.

"The fundamental issue was each episode's scale exceeded the films," McCallum detailed during an appearance on the Young Indy Chronicles podcast. "With the technology available then, $40 million per episode was the absolute minimum we could achieve." McCallum confessed the project's unrealized potential remains "one of our deepest professional regrets."

With 60 meticulously crafted "third draft" scripts that promised to explore the Star Wars galaxy through "provocative, gritty, complex yet brilliant" storytelling from top-tier writers, budgetary limitations ultimately proved fatal. At $40 million per episode, even 60 scripts would surpass $1 billion - a figure even George Lucas couldn't justify during the early 2000s.

"It would have radically reshaped the Star Wars universe," McCallum noted, "likely preventing Disney from ever acquiring Lucasfilm." The project was definitively shelved following Disney's takeover.

While McCallum avoided specific plot revelations, fans speculate the series would bridge Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. Previous reports indicated plans for an entirely original cast, significant universe expansion, and mature-oriented storytelling targeting adults rather than younger audiences.

Initially announced at Star Wars Celebration 2005, Underworld briefly resurfaced when test footage leaked in 2020. Despite persistent fan interest, the ambitious project appears destined to remain in development limbo.
