Respawn Cancels Multiplayer FPS Project Quietly

Apr 20,25

Apex Legends developer Respawn Entertainment has made the difficult decision to cancel an unannounced incubation project this week, resulting in the layoffs of an unspecified number of team members involved in the project. This development was initially reported by Insider Gaming, referencing a LinkedIn post from a former production coordinator who shared their experience of being part of the project for the past year before its cancellation.

IGN has independently verified the cancellation of this unannounced project, which was a multiplayer first-person shooter (FPS). The project was initiated by a team that had previously been working on another canceled Star Wars FPS at Respawn. While the exact number of layoffs remains undisclosed, sources have described the number as "small." Additionally, at least one individual associated with the project has stated on LinkedIn that their departure was voluntary.

This move by Respawn adds to a series of project cancellations, layoffs, and restructurings within Electronic Arts (EA), which began in 2023. The year saw significant job cuts, including the elimination of 50 positions at BioWare and an unknown number at Codemasters. The trend continued nearly a year later with EA laying off 670 employees across the company and terminating several projects, including the previously mentioned Star Wars FPS. As part of these broader cuts, approximately two dozen Respawn employees were let go. Since then, BioWare has undergone further restructuring, with developers being reassigned to other projects and additional key personnel being laid off.

IGN has reached out to Electronic Arts for a statement regarding these developments.
