A recent report from the research firm Newzoo sheds light on the evolving landscape of the battle royale genre, with *Fortnite* emerging as a dominant force despite a general decline in the genre's popularity. According to Newzoo's PC & Console Gaming Report 2025, the battle royale genre has seen a decrease in playtime, dropping from 19% in 2021 to 12% in 2024. This data was gathered using Newzoo's Game Performance Monitor, which tracks 37 markets (excluding China and India) across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox platforms.

Interestingly, while the battle royale genre has experienced a downturn, shooter games have seen an uptick in playtime. Together, shooter and battle royale games account for 40% of total gaming time. Despite the 7% drop in the genre's overall playtime, *Fortnite* has significantly increased its market share within the battle royale category, rising from 43% in 2021 to an impressive 77% in 2024. This growth underscores *Fortnite*'s resilience and ability to capture more of the shrinking pie.

In addition to the dynamics within the battle royale genre, role-playing games (RPGs) have also seen growth, increasing from a 9% share in 2021 to 13% in 2024. Newzoo highlighted that 18% of RPG playtime in 2024 was dedicated to major 2023 releases, including *Baldur's Gate 3*, *Diablo IV*, *Honkai: Star Rail*, *Hogwarts Legacy*, and *Starfield*. This trend suggests a robust interest in RPGs and their evolving narratives and gameplay mechanics.

Newzoo's report emphasizes the fierce competition for gamers' attention and time. While stalwarts like *Fortnite*, *Call of Duty: Warzone*, and *Apex Legends* continue to thrive, other games struggle to maintain their foothold. Meanwhile, the growth of shooters and RPGs indicates a shifting preference among gamers, with standout titles like *Marvel Rivals* and *Baldur's Gate 3* leading the charge.

*Fortnite*'s ability to adapt and expand its offerings, from constant updates to an ever-growing library of experiences and genres, has likely contributed to its enduring success. As gaming trends continue to evolve, it will be fascinating to observe how audience interests shift and which games rise to meet these changing demands.
