Ex-PlayStation Boss Slams Sony Over Until Dawn Writer Snub

Dec 24,25

A former PlayStation narrative lead is urging the Until Dawn film team to properly credit the original game writers in the movie adaptation.

As reported by Eurogamer, Kim MacAskill's petition challenges Sony to establish new standards for crediting creative contributors in transmedia projects. The campaign specifically requests revised credits that properly acknowledge the game development team behind Until Dawn.

"Having recently departed from Until Dawn, I noticed the film credits list directors and screenwriters while omitting the key developers who built this iconic game," MacAskill stated. "These creators dedicated years crafting something extraordinary - their names deserve recognition. Instead? Complete omission. No credit. No appreciation. No respect."

In a detailed LinkedIn post, MacAskill highlighted the disparity between Until Dawn's credits and HBO's The Last of Us adaptation, which properly credited both Naughty Dog and creative director Neil Druckmann.

The director recounted Sony executives explicitly stating that salaried employees retain no creative ownership. "They insisted the IP I helped create would never carry my name," she wrote, directly addressing Sony: "I don't understand why Neil Druckmann receives recognition while others in your company do not."

When questioning rights to her creative work, MacAskill was told Sony "understood my position" but maintained strict corporate policy regarding intellectual property. "They claimed it wasn't personal - just standard company-wide practice," she explained.

"My request was simple: proper credit and minimal ownership rights for potential adaptations," MacAskill added.

Her petition proposes solutions: "Sony should implement fairer IP crediting, especially for cross-media projects. Offering executive producer credits or equivalent recognition would validate the creators who birthed these transformative stories."

"This fight extends beyond Until Dawn - it's about industry integrity," she concluded. "Proper recognition preserves creative legacies and inspires future generations. Sign to support game creators demanding deserved acknowledgment in transmedia storytelling."

Separately, reports suggest Until Dawn Remastered may join PlayStation Plus in May 2025, potentially tying into the recent film release. Our review team rated the film 5/10, noting in IGN's coverage: "The Until Dawn adaptation squanders the game's horror potential, settling for shallow horror movie tropes."
