WWE 2K25: A Solid Evolution, But Is It Enough?

2K's WWE series, revitalized in 2022, continues its iterative improvement strategy with WWE 2K25. Promising additions like "The Island," a revamped story mode, and a new "Bloodline Rules" match type, were unfortunately unavailable for preview. My hands-on time focused on the core gameplay and the updated Showcase Mode.

The Showcase Mode, centered around The Bloodline, offers three match types: recreating history, creating history, and altering history. This provides a unique and engaging experience for WWE fans, improving upon previous iterations. However, while the over-reliance on lengthy real-life footage ("Slingshot") from previous years has been reduced, it's not entirely eliminated. Key moments are now recreated in-engine, resulting in a smoother transition and less time spent watching cutscenes. However, I experienced a loss of control during the final moments of one match, a point of potential improvement. The checklist system remains, but optional timed objectives with cosmetic rewards, and the absence of penalties for failure, represent positive changes. The ability to alter historical match outcomes is a standout feature, offering a fresh perspective on iconic moments.

Gameplay largely retains the successful formula of WWE 2K24, with refinements. The return of chain wrestling adds depth to the beginning of matches, allowing for strategic maneuvering. The submission mini-game also returns, though it's optional, as are other quick-time events. Weapon throwing remains a highlight, enhanced by expanded backstage brawl environments, including the WWE archives, offering a wealth of interactive elements. The inclusion of Prime sponsorships, even allowing the use of a Prime Hydration bottle as a weapon, is a notable, albeit potentially divisive, addition. The long-awaited intergender gameplay is a significant inclusion, expanding match possibilities with the largest roster yet (300+ wrestlers).

A new "Underground" match type, a ropeless exhibition match in a Fight Club-esque setting, promises further innovation. A full match and detailed explanation will be available soon.

WWE 2K25 builds upon a strong foundation with incremental improvements. While the unpreviewed features could significantly impact the overall experience, the changes observed suggest a solid evolution, though perhaps not a revolutionary leap.
