Persona and Metaphor: ReFantazio Composer’s New Turn-Based JRPG Gets A Free Steam Demo

Excitement is building as Guns Undarkness, the eagerly anticipated tactical stealth RPG, announces its free demo will be available at the upcoming Steam Next Fest. This project is led by none other than Shoji Meguro, the acclaimed composer behind the Persona series and Metaphor: ReFantazio. Collaborating with him are Ilya Kuvshino, the renowned character artist from Ghost in the Shell, and rapper Lotus Juice, best known for his contributions to Persona 3.

Shoji Meguro, who has been a pivotal figure at Atlus since 1995, has not only composed music for iconic titles like the Shin Megami Tensei and Persona series but has also ventured into indie game development since 2021. While still working with Atlus on music, Meguro has taken the helm of this new Sci-Fi Stealth Action JRPG, which will be published under Kodansha Game Creators Lab.

Guns Undarkness first caught the public eye at the Indie Live Expo Winter 2021 and successfully met its Kickstarter goals in 2022. Fans can look forward to trying out the free demo at Steam Next Fest starting February 24, 2025, with an early access release slated for later this year.

Inspired by Metal Gear Solid and Persona

According to its Steam page, Guns Undarkness is a "turn-based tactical JRPG inspired by games like Metal Gear Solid and Persona." Set in the year 2045, the game plunges players into a world teetering on the edge of destruction. As a member of a private military company, you'll undertake missions with allies to unravel the mysteries threatening humanity's survival.

The gameplay of Guns Undarkness is split into two key components: stealth and battle. In stealth mode, players can navigate the environment undetected, gaining a strategic advantage in combat if they engage enemies without being spotted. The battles themselves are turn-based, requiring players to issue commands and utilize various firearms to emerge victorious.

The demo for Guns Undarkness will offer approximately 20 minutes of gameplay, including a tutorial on basic controls, the battle system, weapons, and early game strategies. The full game is set to launch in Spring 2025 for Early Access, promising around 10 hours of playtime on PC. While no specific release date has been announced yet, the anticipation continues to grow.
