Zelda Live-Action Film Delayed by Nintendo

Dec 25,25

Nintendo has officially confirmed a delay for its highly anticipated live-action The Legend of Zelda movie.

In a statement shared on social media today, Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto explained that "additional development time" is needed to ensure the film meets the highest standards.

The movie, originally scheduled for March 26, 2027, will now debut on May 7, 2027 — the release slot previously occupied by the postponed Avengers: Secret Wars.

"This is Miyamoto," the statement begins. "Due to production requirements, we are adjusting the release of the live-action The Legend of Zelda film to May 7, 2027.

"Although this places the premiere a few weeks later than initially planned, the extra time will allow us to refine the film and deliver the best possible experience. We appreciate your understanding."

Nintendo did not provide further details behind the scheduling shift, but by moving into the slot left by Avengers: Secret Wars, the company strategically claims a prime release window while avoiding heavy competition around its original March date.

The film's previous release date, just one week after Sonic The Hedgehog 4 on March 19, 2027, would have placed it in direct competition with Godzilla x Kong: Supernova. Meanwhile, Avengers: Secret Wars has been rescheduled for December 17, 2027.

With under two years until the Zelda movie arrives, many details remain under wraps. Casting announcements and specific plot points have yet to be revealed.

First announced in November 2023, the movie is being produced by Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto and Avi Arad, former CEO of Marvel Studios. Sony Pictures Entertainment will co-finance the project with Nintendo and manage worldwide distribution. Derek Connolly, known for Jurassic World, is writing the screenplay, while Wes Ball, director of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, is set to direct.

In May 2024, Ball mentioned that creating a fully motion-capture Zelda film "may not be his preference" after his work on the VFX-heavy Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. He emphasized that The Legend of Zelda should feel "grounded" and "authentic."

"I aim to fulfill the expectations of the fans," Ball shared in another project interview. "I recognize how important this franchise is to its audience, and my goal is to create a compelling, serious film — one that offers an escape… It should feel tangible, sincere, and thrilling, yet retain a sense of wonder and adventure."
