Dune: Awakening Drops PvP Vehicle Damage, Angers Fans

Recall when Funcom assured players that a solution was imminent for those tired of being crushed by helicopters in PvP? Well, the developer delivered—sort of.

Instead of adjusting the Ornithopters directly, the team released a patch ensuring "players no longer take damage from vehicle collisions."

As PC Gamer notes, this makes sense theoretically, safeguarding players not just from griefers aiming to flatten them in PvP, but also from accidental sandbike wipeouts—like launching yourself off a cliff.

While hundreds of players upvoted a subreddit post acknowledging the change, others highlight that griefers have merely adapted their tactics rather than ceasing entirely.

"They should reduce top speed with rocket boosts and increase it with thrusters. PvP should prioritize skill over ambushes. Rockets are for securing objectives, not hunting players—that would fix so much," argued one player.

"Scouts shouldn’t wield rockets," proposed another. "I’ve racked up too many kills unfairly with them. Assaults deserve rockets—they’re slower and require finesse. Scouts should focus on recon and storage."

"Is this ideal? Hard to say. Maybe both parties should take damage. Immunity for Thopters doesn’t stop the annoyance," remarked a third.

They’ve got a point. Currently, only Tier 6 weapons like rocket launchers or Lasguns can down an Orni—tools that take time to unlock.

This also means you can’t speed up NPC fights by ramming them with vehicles. Still, it’s progress, right?

We awarded Dune: Awakening a stellar 8/10 in our review, praising: "This survival MMO brilliantly captures Frank Herbert’s universe, for better or worse. Rising from a parched nobody to an Arrakis warlord is exhilarating, and the lore-rich world delighted this critic.

"That said, combat lacks polish, endgame feels chaotic, and technical bugs linger—though these flaws pale against the game’s colossal strengths."

Launched to acclaim, Dune: Awakening boasts a ‘Very Positive’ Steam rating. Within hours of its June 10 debut, Funcom’s MMO surpassed 142,000 concurrent players, peaking at 189,333 over the weekend.
