DirectX 11 vs. 12: Which API Reigns Supreme?

Mar 13,25

Modern games frequently offer DirectX 11 and 12 options, and Ready or Not is no exception. This choice can be confusing, especially for less tech-savvy players. While DirectX 12 is newer and *potentially* offers better performance, DirectX 11 is often considered more stable. So, which should you choose?

DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 Explained

Simply put, both DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 act as translators between your computer and the game, helping your GPU render visuals.

DirectX 11, being older, is easier for developers to implement. However, it doesn't fully utilize your CPU and GPU resources, potentially limiting performance. Its widespread adoption stems from its ease of use.

DirectX 12, the newer option, is more efficient, better utilizing your CPU and GPU. It provides developers with greater optimization options for enhanced performance. However, its complexity demands more development effort to fully leverage its benefits.

The best choice depends on your system. Modern, high-end systems with good DirectX 12 support will likely see performance gains from DirectX 12. Its ability to distribute workload across multiple CPU cores leads to better frame rates, smoother gameplay, and potentially improved graphics.

However, DirectX 12 isn't ideal for older systems; it can actually cause performance issues. If you have an older PC, DirectX 11 offers greater stability.

In short: Use DirectX 12 on modern systems for potentially better performance; stick with DirectX 11 for older systems to maintain stability.

Setting Your Rendering Mode in Ready or Not

You'll be prompted to choose your rendering mode (DX11 or DX12) when launching Ready or Not via Steam. Simply select your preferred mode at this point. Newer PCs should opt for DX12, while older PCs should choose DX11.

If this prompt doesn't appear, follow these steps:

  1. In your Steam Library, right-click Ready or Not and select Properties.
  2. Click the "General" tab.
  3. Use the "Launch Options" drop-down menu to select your desired rendering mode (DX11 or DX12).

Ready or Not is available now for PC.
