Kojima Aims to Direct Film After Completing PlayStation Game Physint in 5-6 Years

Hideo Kojima's much-anticipated project, Physint, described as a spiritual successor to his iconic Metal Gear series, is still approximately "five or six years" away from its release. This update comes directly from Kojima, who shared his timeline with Le Film Francais, highlighting that his dream to direct a movie remains on hold until after the completion of this new "action espionage" game. This marks his first venture into this genre since his high-profile departure from Konami in 2015.

Since leaving Konami, Kojima has been inundated with offers to develop games at his independent studio. Alongside Physint, he is also working on Death Stranding 2. "Besides Death Stranding 2, there's also Physint in development," Kojima stated, as translated by ResetEra member Red Kong XIX. "That will take me another five or six years. But maybe after that, I could finally decide to take on a film. I grew up with cinema. Directing would be, in a way, a tribute to it. Also, I'm getting older, and I'd prefer to do it while I'm still young!"

The announcement of Physint was made by PlayStation Studios boss Herman Hulst back in January 2024, although updates have been scarce since then. Initially, Kojima hinted that Physint could also be considered a movie, but he later clarified on X/Twitter that the project's "look, story, theme, cast, acting, fashion, sound, etc… are all at the next level of ‘Digital Entertainment’ that could be called a ‘movie.’"

In addition to Physint, Kojima Productions is juggling several other projects, including Death Stranding 2 and OD, a new IP in collaboration with Xbox Game Studios, featuring actress Hunter Schafer and filmmaker Jordan Peele. Furthermore, Kojima is involved in A24's film adaptation of the original Death Stranding.

Death Stranding 2: On The Beach is slated for release next month on June 26. The franchise's star, actor Norman Reedus, recently shared with IGN that he would reprise his role in the upcoming film adaptation, saying, "of course" he would play himself.

Kojima continues to generate buzz not only with his ongoing projects but also with revelations about discarded game concepts, including an intriguing 'Forgetting Game' where the protagonist loses important information and abilities if the player takes too long a break. Last week, he disclosed that he has left his team a USB stick filled with game ideas to be explored after his passing, ensuring his creative legacy continues.
