Killzone Composer: Fans Seeking More Casual, Quicker Games?

May 03,25

The Killzone franchise, a beloved series from Sony, has been on hiatus for quite some time, leaving fans eager for its return. Recently, Killzone composer Joris de Man shared his hopes for the series' revival during an interview with VideoGamer for the PlayStation: The Concert Tour.

De Man acknowledged the existing fan petitions and expressed his belief in Killzone's iconic status. However, he also pointed out the challenges of bringing it back, citing the need to consider current gaming trends and sensitivities. "I know that there have been petitions for it," de Man remarked. "I think it's tricky because, I can't speak for Guerrilla or anything... I don't know if it will ever happen. I hope it will because I think it is quite an iconic franchise, but I also think it kind of has to take into account the sensitivities and the shift in, I guess, what people want because it is quite bleak in some ways."

When it comes to the potential format of a Killzone revival, de Man suggested that a remastered collection might be more successful than a new game. "I think [a] remastered one would be successful, I don't know if a new game would be as much," he said, noting that gamers might prefer something more casual and quicker-paced. This is in contrast to Killzone's characteristic slower, weightier gameplay, which was notably criticized for input lag in Killzone 2 on the PlayStation 3. The series is known for its dark, gritty visuals and atmosphere.

Despite these sentiments, recent statements from Sony's Guerrilla Games suggest a shift in focus toward the Horizon series, leaving the future of Killzone uncertain. The last Killzone game, Killzone Shadow Fall, was released over a decade ago, and while the possibility of reviving the franchise or another PlayStation shooter is intriguing to some, it remains to be seen if it will ever come to fruition.

For fans still holding out hope, knowing they have supporters like Joris de Man might offer some comfort as they await any news on the potential return of Killzone.
