Disney has announced that the Coco attraction at Disneyland will be situated in areas currently used as backstage spaces near Disney California Adventure’s Paradise Gardens Park and Pixar Pier, while the new Avatar land will occupy part of the existing Hollywood Backlot area. As a result, Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! will permanently close in early 2026 to accommodate the Avatar project.

Disney Parks Blog shared these updates along with fresh concept art, confirming that construction for the Coco attraction will start backstage this fall. Revealed at D23 2024, this will be the first attraction inspired by Pixar’s cherished film Coco.

The Coco experience will draw from the storytelling of Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean, with Disney’s team using cutting-edge Audio-Animatronic technology to bring skeletal characters to life in striking, innovative ways.

The Avatar destination remains in early development, with more details, including construction timelines, to be shared later. Also announced at D23 2024, this area will reflect Avatar: The Way of Water and future Avatar films, creating a unique Pandora experience.

Pandora – The World of Avatar has been a staple at Disney World’s Animal Kingdom since 2017, and soon Disneyland will introduce its own immersive area inspired by James Cameron’s films.

While the closure of Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! is bittersweet, Disney World’s Hollywood Studios will soon offer a new Monsters, Inc. land, featuring the first suspended coaster in a Disney Park, set in the iconic door warehouse.

In addition to the Coco and Avatar projects, Disney confirmed plans for a new parking structure and transportation hub on the east side of Disneyland Resort, replacing part of the Manchester cast member parking lot.

This new facility will offer approximately 6,000 parking spaces, shuttle and rideshare zones, security screening, and dedicated access from Disney Way, enhancing parking and traffic flow across the resort. A pedestrian bridge over Harbor Boulevard will connect to a reimagined esplanade arrival experience, providing direct access to and from Harbor Boulevard.
