Activision pulls Black Ops 6 ads after backlash, calls them 'error'

Nov 02,25

Activision has removed controversial Call of Duty advertisements that appeared within Black Ops 6 and Warzone loadout menus, claiming they were an unintentional "feature test" mistakenly included in the Season 4 update.

After Season 4 launched last week, players encountered weapon bundle promotions while customizing their loadouts in both games. These ads couldn't be skipped during gameplay adjustments.

The community reacted strongly against these intrusive ads, with many considering them unacceptable. "I'd understand promotional content in free-to-play Warzone, but implementing this in a premium $80 title? Absolutely not," one player asserted. Another commented, "For a full-priced game, surely we deserve ad-free menu navigation?" Others compared the experience to mobile games: "The constant upsell prompts make this feel more like a freemium app than a AAA title."

Did they seriously add bundle ads to the weapon selection menu?

Activision announced via Twitter that the ads have been disabled, explaining: "A UI test featuring select store items in Loadout menus was accidentally included in Season 04. We've since removed this feature."

The Call of Duty community remains skeptical about Activision's explanation, with many doubting the accidental nature of the ad implementation.

"This follows their usual pattern - test unpopular features and retract them if backlash is severe," observed one fan. Another interpreted Activision's response differently: "Translation: We realized players wouldn't tolerate forced advertising."

Call of Duty's monetization history includes several controversies. Players already contend with $70-$80 base game pricing plus layered battle pass options. Many perceive Activision Blizzard's microtransaction approach as increasingly aggressive following Microsoft's $69 billion acquisition.

The gaming community awaits Activision's next move, particularly regarding the rumored Black Ops 2 sequel, watching closely for potential permanent ad integrations.
