Zach Braff Joins Cast for Confirmed Scrubs Reboot

Television has a knack for bringing back the old to make it feel new again — and 2025 is shaping up to be no exception. From reboots of iconic universes like The Office to long-awaited revivals such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, fans are being treated to familiar worlds with fresh perspectives. Now, it's time for Scrubs to step back into the spotlight.

It’s been 24 years since Zach Braff first portrayed JD, the idealistic yet awkward junior doctor navigating life at Sacred Heart Hospital. Now, Braff is set to return to the role in ABC’s upcoming Scrubs reboot, which aims to blend nostalgia with new beginnings by featuring both fresh faces and beloved characters from the original series.

This idea may ring a bell: during Scrubs' controversial ninth season, Braff and other main cast members transitioned out of the spotlight, passing the torch to a younger ensemble. Unfortunately, that attempt didn’t resonate with audiences, leading to the season's cancellation after just nine episodes.

Now, nearly two decades later, ABC is giving the revival another shot. The project is being spearheaded by the show’s original creator, Bill Lawrence, who envisions this next chapter as a hybrid reboot and revival — a fresh entry point that still honors the spirit of the original.

With Braff officially on board, reports from Entertainment Weekly suggest that more returning cast members could soon follow suit. As Lawrence previously explained to Deadline, the decision to revive Scrubs hinges on two key elements:

“A: people wanting to see what the world of medicine was like for the people they love, which is part of any successful reboot. But B: I think that show always worked because you get to see young people dropped into the world of medicine, knowing young people that go there are super idealistic and are doing it because it's a calling.”

Originally airing from 2001 to 2010, Scrubs ran for 182 episodes across nine seasons, leaving behind a legacy of humor, heart, and heartfelt storytelling. While no official word has been released on when production will begin for the new episodes, fans are eagerly awaiting further updates.
