'I Know It's Not What Everybody Else Is Doing' — Xbox Boss Phil Spencer Will Keep on Putting PlayStation and Nintendo Logos in Microsoft Showcases

Microsoft's recent Xbox showcases have notably included PlayStation 5 alongside Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Game Pass, signaling a significant shift in the company's multiplatform strategy. This contrasts with their June 2024 showcase, where PlayStation 5 appearances were less prominent, with some titles announced for PlayStation 5 only after the initial Xbox event. Titles like Doom: The Dark Ages, Ninja Gaiden 4, and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 showcased this change, displaying PS5 alongside other platforms. Conversely, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Diablo 4's Vessel of Hatred expansion, and Assassin's Creed Shadows omitted PS5 from their initial announcements during that showcase.

This contrasts sharply with Sony and Nintendo's approach. Their showcases, such as the recent State of Play, continue to focus primarily on their own platforms, even for multiplatform titles. Games like Monster Hunter Wilds, Shinobi: Art of Vengeance, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, and Onimusha: Way of the Sword were promoted without mention of Xbox or other platforms. Sony's strategy remains firmly rooted in emphasizing its own consoles.

In an interview with XboxEra, Phil Spencer explained this shift, stating it’s about transparency and showcasing games across all available platforms. He acknowledged logistical challenges in the June 2024 showcase, leading to inconsistencies in platform representation. Spencer emphasized a desire for openness, highlighting that while not all platforms offer equal opportunities (referencing limitations on closed platforms), the focus should remain on game accessibility. He believes this approach allows Microsoft to create larger games while still supporting its native platform.

This strategy suggests future Xbox showcases will likely feature PS5 and, potentially, Nintendo Switch 2 logos alongside Xbox. Therefore, Microsoft's June 2025 showcase might include titles like Gears of War: E-Day, Fable, Perfect Dark, State of Decay 3, and the year's Call of Duty, all displaying PS5 alongside Xbox. However, it’s unlikely Sony and Nintendo will reciprocate this approach.
