The renowned Dungeons & Dragons show, Critical Role, is on the brink of unveiling its first major video game, with CEO Travis Willingham teasing that an announcement could come "any day." During an interview with Business Insider, the team shared their ambitious plans for the future. While details about the game's title and its integration into the Critical Role universe are still under wraps, Willingham assured that the development team is diligently working on the project.

Willingham, who is also an actor and one of the stars of Critical Role, described the upcoming video game as an interactive experience where players will have the power to shape the story. "They'll actually be getting their hands on the stick and controlling the outcome of the story, changing what might be possible from not just some of their favorite characters, but new offerings in the world of Exandria," he explained.

Critical Role was co-founded by Willingham alongside other notable voice actors such as Liam O'Brien, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel, Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Matthew Mercer, and more. From its humble beginnings, the D&D show has expanded into a vast universe, highlighted by its successful Amazon Prime Video series, Critical Role: The Legend of Vox Machina.

The forthcoming video game will be a standalone project within the Critical Role ecosystem, not directly tied to its other ventures. In a December 2024 interview with Rolling Stone, Willingham revealed that the team was in "active pursuit" of creating a Critical Role video game spinoff, noting they were "starting to come to the end of a long road that we’ve been undertaking for the last couple of years." It remains uncertain whether the game will follow one of the group's existing campaigns or introduce a new narrative within the Critical Role world.

Originally, the Critical Role team anticipated making an announcement before the end of 2024 or at the start of 2025. Now, with nearly three months of the new year gone, an announcement seems imminent.

Willingham also touched on the team's approach to collaborations, stating to Rolling Stone, "Those collaborations we’ve had with various partners have been little toe dips in the pool just to see how it feels. You know, there’s a lot of upheaval in the interactive space right now. And we’ve seen studios sort of bear and weather those strains. It’s trying to become smarter about it and find out how we might fit into that larger ecosystem."

While a release date for the Critical Role video game has yet to be announced, fans can look forward to the first details on The Legend of Vox Machina Season 4 in the meantime.
