Spider-Man 2 Launch on PC Marred by 'Mixed' Steam Reviews, Performance Issues

Feb 24,25

Spider-Man 2's PC port, despite promising initial performance benchmarks, has received a mixed reception on Steam due to widespread technical issues. Currently, only 55% of Steam reviews are positive, with numerous users reporting crashes and other performance problems.

One RTX 4090 user, running the latest Nvidia drivers, noted frequent game crashes. Other players described the game as "completely unplayable," citing crashes every five minutes and requesting refunds. Reviewers highlighted numerous problems including erratic frame rates in cutscenes, audio desynchronization, freezing, stuttering, and missing lighting effects. One user even stated they would seek a refund due to the game's instability.

The primary issue seems to be frequent graphics driver crashes, even on high-end PCs. A common error message points to outdated drivers, excessive in-game settings, GPU overheating, or game errors.

PlayFurther complaints include malfunctioning DLSS and ray tracing, extended loading times, missing textures, and persistent audio problems. Some players reported performance stutters escalating to crashes after extended play sessions, potentially indicating a memory leak.

Nixxes Software, the port developer, acknowledged the issues on the Steam forums, directing users to their support website for troubleshooting guides and requesting logs and crash dumps for faster diagnosis. They also addressed a bug impacting photo-op missions, suggesting lowering graphics settings or resolution as a temporary fix if frame rates drop below 20 FPS.
