Skyblivion, a Fan Remake of Oblivion in Skyrim's Engine, Is Still Targeting This Year

Feb 27,25

Skyblivion, a fan-made recreation of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion within the Skyrim engine, is slated for a 2025 release.

A recent developer update stream confirmed the team's commitment to this ambitious goal. Developed by volunteer modders, Skyblivion represents a massive undertaking, years in the making. Despite the scale, the team remains confident in a 2025 launch, stating their hope to complete the project, possibly even exceeding their own expectations.

This project goes beyond a simple one-to-one remake. The developers are significantly enhancing various aspects of the original Oblivion, including ensuring unique items maintain their uniqueness and bolstering the impact of existing bosses, with Mannimarco cited as a prime example. The stream showcased the "A Brush with Death" quest, demonstrating the impressive visual fidelity achieved.

Adding another layer of intrigue is the persistent rumor of an official Oblivion remake. Earlier this year, alleged details of such a project surfaced, hinting at combat overhauls and other modifications. While Microsoft declined to comment, the existence of an Oblivion remaster was inadvertently revealed in documents from the Activision Blizzard/FTC trial. The status of this official remake, alongside other projects mentioned in those documents, remains unconfirmed.

The existence of a large-scale fan mod like Skyblivion could potentially impact Microsoft and Bethesda's plans for an official release. Bethesda games have a rich history of community modding, extending from older titles to the recent Starfield. The hope is that Skyblivion avoids the late-stage development issues that plagued Fallout London.
