Scalebound: Hopes for Revival Sparked?

Apr 19,25

Scalebound was once heralded as one of the most ambitious action projects of its time, boasting dynamic combat, immersive music, and a unique system of interaction with a massive dragon companion. As one of the rare Xbox One exclusives, it captured the gaming community's imagination upon its announcement in 2014. However, after years of development, Microsoft officially pulled the plug in 2017, leaving fans disappointed.

Recently, Clovers Inc's official account on X shared a video featuring Hideki Kamiya and his team revisiting archived gameplay footage of Scalebound. In the video, Kamiya expressed a sense of nostalgia and pride for the project, despite its unfortunate cancellation. Further fueling speculation, Kamiya retweeted the video with a message directed at Phil Spencer, head of Microsoft's gaming division, saying, "Come on, Phil, let's do this!" This plea suggests Kamiya's ongoing interest in reviving the game, a sentiment he has voiced before, notably in early 2022 when he expressed a desire to discuss the project's potential revival with Microsoft.

Talks about bringing Scalebound back have resurfaced periodically, with rumors intensifying in early 2023. While several sources hinted at a possible reboot, no official confirmation from Microsoft has been forthcoming. In an interview with Game Watch, a Japanese publication, Phil Spencer responded to inquiries about Scalebound with a smile and the comment, "I have nothing to add at this time," leaving fans in suspense.

Even if Microsoft shows renewed interest in Scalebound, a swift return of the game is unlikely. Currently, Hideki Kamiya is occupied with the development of a new Okami installment at Clovers Inc. Should Xbox decide to greenlight the project, Kamiya would only be able to start working on Scalebound after completing his current commitments. Nevertheless, the continued discussion and interest surrounding Scalebound, years after its cancellation, offer hope that this long-awaited title might one day see the light of day.
