Nintendo Says It's Taking 'All Possible Measures' to Beat Switch 2 Scalpers

Nintendo is prepared to combat Switch 2 launch shortages and scalpers, stating, "We are making preparations." Following its latest financial report, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa addressed concerns about a repeat of the original Switch's 2017 launch shortages. He confirmed to Nikkei (as translated by VGC), that Nintendo will implement measures learned from past experiences with scalpers and supply chain issues.

Poll: Are you planning on getting a Switch 2?

These preparations likely involve significantly increasing Switch 2 production. Last year, Nintendo emphasized sufficient manufacturing to meet demand as a primary strategy against scalpers. The initial Switch launch suffered from limited supply, driving up prices for consumers. However, Furukawa stated in July 2024 that the Switch 2 launch will be different, prioritizing ample production to counter resale issues. He also mentioned exploring additional countermeasures within legal and regulatory boundaries, tailored to regional circumstances. Component shortages, which previously hampered Switch production, are no longer a significant concern.

A Switch 2 Direct is planned for April 2nd, promising further details. Hands-on events will also take place globally.

Furukawa addressed declining Switch sales, attributing the decrease to factors beyond consumers waiting for the Switch 2. He highlighted the Switch's strong performance in its eighth year, while acknowledging that sales haven't met targets.

Nintendo plans continued Switch support post-Switch 2 launch, contingent on consumer demand. This includes the 2025 releases of Pokémon Legends: Z-A and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond on the original Switch.
