While NetherRealm has confirmed its next project was decided upon three years ago, Ed Boon assures fans of continued support for Mortal Kombat 1. The anticipation remains high for the studio's next title, with many speculating it will be a new installment in the Injustice franchise, although this remains unconfirmed. The decision to prioritize another Mortal Kombat title over an Injustice game was influenced by factors including the COVID-19 pandemic and the transition to a newer Unreal Engine. However, Boon has explicitly stated that the Injustice franchise is not closed off.
