Modders for Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 have been pushing boundaries since the game’s blockbuster launch last year. Their latest achievement may be their most impressive yet.

Tom, known as Warhammer Workshop, the creator of Space Marine 2’s acclaimed Astartes Overhaul, announced the arrival of 12-player co-op this week, and it’s stunning. Gameplay clips reveal multiple players battling a Tyranid Trygon Prime in a fight that feels like an MMO raid encounter.

This seemed impossible, as the base game only supports three-player co-op. Yet, with support from developer Saber Interactive, the modding team has shattered that limit to enable 12-player co-op, aiming to elevate Space Marine 2 to new heights.

“I’m genuinely amazed by Saber’s support for modders,” Tom shared with IGN. “We never thought 12-player PvE sessions would happen this soon. Their trust and generosity have made this massive step possible, transforming what we can achieve.”

It’s important to note that the current mod is a test—effective, but still a test. The 12-player co-op disrupts the game’s PvE balance, as expected with nine additional players facing off against Tyranids and Thousand Sons, beyond what Saber designed.

With 12-player co-op now possible, modders are crafting enhancements to maximize its potential. Tom told IGN the team is developing modes like prop hunt, PvP within operations, “epic” horde mode upgrades for the upcoming official horde mode, and, most thrilling, raid-style missions featuring “hard-hitting bosses that demand real teamwork to defeat, alongside entirely new mechanics.”

The Space Marine 2 modding community has flourished, with around 20,000 enthusiasts active in the main Discord server.

“As a modder and player, I’m thrilled,” Tom added. “Kudos to Saber for enabling this and for delivering stellar content without the typical predatory battle-pass tactics common in modern games.”

It’s a vibrant time for Space Marine 2, with the anticipated horde mode, a new class, and additional Operations maps and weapons on the horizon. Saber recently outlined Patch 8, shared horde mode mechanics, and unveiled its map.

Space Marine 3 is officially in the works, unsurprising given Space Marine 2’s success. This 12-player co-op mod might offer a glimpse of what’s next. When Space Marine 3 was announced, it promised “larger, more spectacular battles.” That sounds like an increase in co-op player limits to me.

Until then, modders will keep the experience fresh and engaging, and this latest effort is a prime example.
