Keanu Reeves Unhappy With Constantine 2 Script, Co-Star Says

Fans of Keanu Reeves will be excited to hear that a sequel to Constantine has been in development — though recent comments from one of Reeves' co-stars suggest the actor isn't fully satisfied with the current scripts.

"There's a lot of back-and-forth because... I think Keanu isn't thrilled with the scripts," actor Peter Stormare revealed in an interview with The Direct. "The first film wasn't an immediate hit—it gradually became a cult classic, and now it's one of the most beloved. But studios today want sequels packed with spectacle—cars flying, flashy fight scenes, over-the-top action."

Stormare, who played Lucifer in the 2005 original and will return for the sequel, emphasized that Reeves wants to keep the tone more grounded and psychological rather than action-heavy.

"Keanu's stance is, 'I've done John Wick—this is a different kind of story,'" Stormare explained. "Constantine is more metaphysical, about demons and flawed humans. That's what made it resonate. I’d love to see God appear again, but now in a black suit, almost mirroring Lucifer from the first film. Time has passed, so it won’t be identical, but Keanu wants the sequel to stay true to the original’s spirit."

Reeves also reportedly worries that Warner Bros. may push for a grander, Marvel-style approach—after all, Constantine is based on DC's Hellblazer comics, and studios often seek blockbuster-scale adaptations. Reeves recently met with DC Studios to discuss the project, but excessive spectacle could dilute what made the original unique.

"It took years for Constantine to find its audience, and it worked because it didn’t rely on nonstop action," Stormare said. "Why change that? Keep it intimate—no need for CGI overload or constant shootouts. Not every film has to be a Marvel spectacle."

Director Francis Lawrence is confirmed to return, but production and release dates remain uncertain.
