HBO Reportedly in Final Talks With John Lithgow to Play Dumbledore in Harry Potter Series

HBO is reportedly in advanced negotiations with acclaimed actor John Lithgow, known for his role as Lord Farquaad in Shrek, to portray the iconic Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore in their upcoming Harry Potter series. While HBO remains tight-lipped, Variety reports that a deal is imminent. This follows earlier speculation in November that Mark Rylance was a frontrunner for the role.

"We understand the significant interest surrounding this project and the resulting speculation," an HBO spokesperson stated. "As pre-production continues, casting confirmations will only be made once agreements are finalized."

Lithgow's extensive acting credits include The World According to Garp, Terms of Endearment, Footloose, Dexter, and The Crown, among many others.

While much of the casting remains undisclosed, reports suggest significant progress is being made. The search for actors to play Harry, Hermione, and Ron is underway, and Paapa Essiedu is reportedly cast as Severus Snape.

The series will prioritize British talent, mirroring the films. This is perhaps unsurprising given J.K. Rowling's reported involvement in the casting process.

Announced in April 2023, the Harry Potter adaptation promises a faithful, in-depth telling of the novels, exceeding the limitations of the film format. Succession producers Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod (also a Game of Thrones veteran) will lead the direction and writing.
