Original Frostpunk Remade Using The Unreal Engine

In a surprising twist, Frostpunk developer 11 bit Studios announced their next game in the series on Twitter (X) on April 24. Frostpunk 1886 is not a new installment but a remake of the original game, now powered by the Unreal Engine.

The announcement detailed that Frostpunk 1886 will introduce a completely new Purpose Path, eagerly awaited mod support, and much more, all while preserving the essence of the original game. In a follow-up Steam post on the same day, the developers elaborated on their vision for this project.

11 bit Studios is transitioning from their proprietary Liquid Engine, which was used for the first game, to the Unreal Engine. Having developed Frostpunk 2 using Unreal Engine 5, they recognized the potential to enhance the original game significantly. "Our goal is to expand upon it with improved visuals, higher resolution, and all the other possibilities Unreal has to offer," they explained.

Eyeing A 2027 Release

The development of Frostpunk 1886 is underway, with a targeted release date set for 2027. This project aims to serve as an excellent entry point for new players into the Frostpunk universe, while also providing a fresh experience for long-time fans who will find joy in revisiting the game.

Looking ahead, 11 bit Studios has promised additional content through future DLCs. The studio is committed to a more frequent release schedule, starting with Frostpunk 1886.
