Elden Ring Nightreign will soon allow players to explore the shifting lands of Limveld, battling for survival alone or in groups of three. For those who prefer pairs, though, you’ll need to welcome a third player.

In IGN’s interview with Elden Ring Nightreign director Junya Ishizaki, the lead developer explained the decision to focus on solo and trio experiences. When asked why there’s no option for two players to join without a matchmade third, Ishizaki admitted it was an oversight.

"The simple answer is that this was simply overlooked during development—we never designed a two-player option, so we’re truly sorry about that," Ishizaki said. "As we’ve said before, Nightreign was built from the ground up as a three-player co-op game, balanced specifically for three, and that remained our core focus."

So if you're playing with just your trusted partner, prepare to have a random third player join your group. Who knows? You might end up with someone surprisingly skilled.

If you're playing solo, Elden Ring Nightreign does accommodate that. Ishizaki confirmed that the game’s parameters "adjust dynamically based on the number of players in the session," ensuring solo adventurers won’t be overwhelmed.

You’ll need to track down self-revive items, which are included for solo players. And if you’re playing in trios, that’s exactly what Nightreign was designed around. Whether duo support ever arrives, having an extra ally nearby will always help when facing Nightreign’s most terrifying bosses.
