Monster Hunter Wilds Introduces The Black Flame, Nu Udra

Welcome To Oilwell Basin

In an exclusive interview with IGN, Monster Hunter Wilds directors Yuya Tokuda and Kaname Fujioka introduced players to a captivating new area, the Oilwell Basin, and its majestic ruler, the Nu Udra.

The Oilwell Basin stands out with its vertical structure, a departure from the series' typical broad, horizontal locales. "We had two horizontally broad locales in the Windward Plains and Scarlet Forest, so we decided to make the Oilwell Basin a vertically connected place. The deeper you go, the more magma-filled and hot it gets," explained Fujioka. He noted that the top layers feature oil-like swamps, creating a distinct "gradation" in the area's structure.

Tokuda added that the area transforms dramatically during the event known as the Plenty. Entering from the center or bottom level, players will experience an underwater volcano ecosystem, drawing inspiration from the Coral Highlands in Monster Hunter World. "During the Fallow and Inclemency, smoke pours out of the Oilwell Basin like a volcano or hot spring. But during the Plenty, it shifts to a clear, marine-like tone. Observing the environmental biology, you'll discover it's home to creatures typically found on the ocean floor," he detailed.

This unique environment hosts a diverse range of creatures, making the Oilwell Basin a rich and dynamic locale despite its seemingly lifeless appearance.

Nu Udra, The Black Flame

Dominating the Oilwell Basin is the apex predator known as the "Black Flame," Nu Udra. This colossal, octopus-like monster boasts a slimy, flammable body adapted to its environment. Using its agile tentacles, Nu Udra captures prey before incinerating them with scorching flames. Alongside Rey Dau of the Windward Plains, who commands lightning, and Uth Duna of the Scarlet Forest, who wields water, Nu Udra completes the trio with its fire affinity.

Fujioka shared that the design of Nu Udra was inspired by his desire to include a tentacled creature. "I’ve always wanted to add a tentacled creature at some point," he said. They modified a typically aquatic creature to enhance its visual impact and added horn-like elements for a "demonic" appearance. The battle music further enhances this theme, incorporating elements reminiscent of black magic. "We had the composers include phrases and musical instruments reminiscent of black magic. It ended up being a unique and compelling piece of music," Tokuda added.

Engaging Nu Udra in battle is a formidable challenge, as it uses multiple tentacles for both focused and area-of-effect attacks in rapid succession. It is also immune to Flash Bombs, relying on its tentacles rather than vision to sense its surroundings.

More Monsters In The Basin

The Oilwell Basin is home to more than just Nu Udra. The Ajarakan, a large, scaly, monkey-like creature covered in flames, roams the area. Its martial arts-inspired attacks and powerful fists make it a thrilling addition to the game. Ajarakan combines immense physical strength with fiery prowess, promising intense battles.

Another intriguing inhabitant is the Rompopolo, a globular monster with needle-like teeth and a mouth that emits toxic gases. Its eerie purple color and glowing red eyes evoke a mad scientist aesthetic. The developers drew inspiration from this theme, calling Rompopolo a "tricky monster." Despite its menacing look, the equipment crafted from its drops is surprisingly "cute" for both the Hunter and their Palico companion.

Returning to the Oilwell Basin is Gravios from Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate. Its rocky carapace and fiery breath make it a fitting resident for this volcanic environment. "When considering monsters that fit the Oilwell Basin's environment and the game's progression, Gravios seemed like a fresh challenge," Tokuda explained.

With these exciting reveals, anticipation builds for the release of Monster Hunter Wilds on February 28th.
