The sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, codenamed Project Orion, is poised to enhance the gaming experience by introducing a new city alongside the familiar Night City. During the Digital Dragons 2025 conference on May 20, Mike Pondsmith, the founder of R. Talsorian Games and the game's designer, provided insights into the sequel's development.

Although Pondsmith's involvement in the upcoming game isn't as extensive as it was with Cyberpunk 2077, he remains closely connected to the project. "I see the scripts. Last week I was wandering around talking to different departments and seeing what they had like, ‘this is the new Cyberware, what do you think?’" he shared.

Pondsmith also confirmed the addition of a new city, stating, "I remember looking at it and going, ‘I understand the feel that you’re going for, and this really does work, it doesn’t feel like Blade Runner, it feels more like Chicago gone wrong’. And I said, ‘yeah, I can see this working’."

CD Projekt Red (CDPR) has also been actively recruiting for Cyberpunk 2. A recent job listing for a Lead Encounter Designer seeks a candidate to "help formulate solutions for and help create memorable gameplay encounters that will thrill and excite our players." The role includes working closely with the systems design team to develop "the most realistic and reactive crowd system in any game to date."

While details about Project Orion remain scarce, the insights from Pondsmith and CDPR's recruitment efforts suggest that Cyberpunk 2 will build on the rich world-building and complex storytelling that made its predecessor a standout title.

In other news, CDPR has unveiled new footage of Cyberpunk 2077 optimized for the Nintendo Switch 2. The studio has made significant efforts to tailor the game for the new handheld console. On their website, CDPR has shared around 37 minutes of B-roll footage showcasing the game's performance on Switch 2.

Reports from Nintendo Switch 2 showcase events in New York and Paris earlier this year highlighted some performance issues, particularly frame drops. Business Insider noted that, "Such an intensive game playing on the Switch 2 is a fun novelty, but this definitely isn't the best way to play CyberPunk. I encountered lots of frame drops."

However, CDPR Engineer Tim Green expressed satisfaction with the port's progress in an interview with Game File on April 25. "We haven’t had to fight with fitting into memory, and the speed of the data storage has helped alleviate some of those early streaming problems. This has allowed us to focus our attention on improving other things, and we’re very happy with the result," he explained.

Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition is scheduled for release on the Switch 2 on June 5, 2025.
