Civilization VII is making a splash in the virtual reality world with its upcoming release on Meta Quest 3 and 3S headsets this Spring 2025. This marks the franchise's debut in VR and mixed reality gaming.

Meta Quest 3 Exclusivity

2K Games and Firaxis Games announced the exciting news at the Civ World Summit Event on February 8, 2025. The VR experience will be exclusive to Meta's latest headsets, leaving PSVR2 users out in the cold for now. Dennis Shirk, Executive Franchise Producer, expressed enthusiasm for this new era of strategic gaming, while Meta's Chris Pruett highlighted the momentum in mixed reality gaming, emphasizing Civ VII VR's appeal to dedicated strategy players.

Immersive Gameplay and Multiplayer Options

Civ VII VR transports players to a detailed command table, offering a unique perspective on the game world. Players can zoom in for intricate details or zoom out for a broader strategic view, mimicking the experience of a tabletop game. The game seamlessly transitions between immersive VR and mixed reality modes, adapting to the player's environment. Whether in a virtual museum or integrated into a real-world space, the command table provides a dynamic and engaging experience.

Single-player, co-op, and competitive multiplayer modes are all available, supporting up to four players with Meta Quest 3/3S headsets. Players can team up against AI opponents or compete head-to-head for global domination. Online multiplayer requires both a 2K and Meta account.

Firaxis Games is actively addressing player feedback from the Civ VII early access period (February 6, 2025, for Deluxe and Founder's Editions). The team is prioritizing UI improvements to enhance intuitiveness and map readability, based on community concerns. Future updates will also include community-requested features like multiplayer teams and diverse map types. A quality-of-life update in March is planned, focusing on UI adjustments, AI balance, diplomacy refinements, and bug fixes.
