Hulu may be bringing Buffy back from the dead. Variety reports a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot is in the works, with Sarah Michelle Gellar potentially returning as Buffy, albeit in a recurring role. The series will focus on a new Slayer.

Adding star power behind the camera, Academy Award winner Chloé Zhao (known for Nomadland and Eternals) is in negotiations to direct and executive produce. Nora and Lila Zuckerman are attached to write and serve as showrunners. Notably, original creator Joss Whedon is not involved.

PlayWhedon's absence follows previous accusations of creating a toxic work environment on the original Buffy and its spin-off, Angel.

Plot details remain scarce, but the reboot will center on a new Slayer, with Gellar’s potential return adding a significant layer to the story.

The original Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which ran for seven seasons (1997-2003), followed Buffy Summers, a high school student chosen to battle supernatural forces. Her core group included Willow Rosenberg, Xander Harris, and Watcher Rupert Giles. The series' legacy continued through a canonical comic book series and the spin-off Angel.
