Bend Studio Dev Says 'We Still Plan on Creating Cool S**t' After Sony Live Service Cancelation

Bend Studio, the developer behind Days Gone, remains committed to creating exciting new projects, despite Sony's recent cancellation of its unannounced live-service game. This follows Sony's decision to also cancel a live-service God of War title in development at Bluepoint Games. While neither studio will be closed, Sony's recent struggles with live-service titles are undeniable. The swift demise of Concord, a PlayStation live-service game, serves as a stark example of these challenges. This failure, coupled with the cancellation of Naughty Dog's The Last of Us multiplayer project, highlights the difficulties Sony has faced in this area. Even former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida expressed reservations about Sony's live-service push. Bend Studio's community manager, Kevin McAllister, reassured fans, tweeting that the studio still plans to create "cool shit." Sony executives acknowledged the lessons learned from both the success of Helldivers 2 and the failure of Concord, citing issues such as insufficient early testing and a siloed organizational structure. They emphasized the need for improved development processes and better release window planning to avoid cannibalization. Despite these setbacks, several PlayStation live-service games remain under development, including Marathon (Bungie), Horizon Online (Guerrilla), and Fairgame$ (Haven Studios). Bend Studio's last release was Days Gone in 2019 (PlayStation 4), later ported to PC in 2021.
