Investigating vehicle collisions requires thorough data collection. The CrashScan app, used with an OBDLink MX+ Bluetooth adapter, allows you to scan a vehicle's computer modules, including the Event Data Recorder (EDR), often called a "black box," where supported (see support details below). CrashScan helps investigators identify, extract, and interpret stored accident data. This data is invaluable for validating insurance claims and providing crucial insights into liability in questionable collision cases.
Vehicle Support (EDR & Full System Diagnostic Scan)
CrashScan supports over 3000 unique vehicle year/make/model combinations internationally. Check compatibility here: https://collisionsciences.ca/reports/check_support/
Contextual Accident Reports
A successful CrashScan provides detailed information about impact severity, orientation (front, rear, or side), and crucial contextual data, including:
- Accident severity (minor, moderate, or severe)
- EDR trigger thresholds
- 5 seconds of pre-crash data: speed, brake and accelerator pedal use, and steering input
- Number of occupants and seatbelt status
- Estimated repair cost
- Likelihood of structural crush damage
- Injury risk thresholds (whiplash, injury duration)
- Typical g-forces in daily activities for comparison
*Injury risk algorithms utilize stored acceleration values, scientific literature, and databases like the National Automotive Sampling System (NASS).

Privacy Legislation Regarding EDR Data
Canada: Currently, no specific legislation governs EDR data; it's considered diagnostic and not "private." However, obtaining consent from the vehicle owner is best practice among insurers.
United States: The federal Driver Privacy Act of 2015 limits EDR data retrieval and establishes vehicle owner/lessee ownership of the collected information. Seventeen states (Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Washington) have enacted laws regarding EDRs and privacy. These laws often require owner/policyholder consent for data download, with certain exceptions.
End-User Consent
By downloading the CrashScan app from Collision Sciences, Inc., you consent to its installation, future updates, and upgrades. You can withdraw consent at any time by uninstalling the app. You acknowledge that the app may (i) automatically communicate with Collision Sciences' servers for functionality and usage metrics recording, (ii) affect app-related preferences or data on your device, and (iii) collect information as detailed in our privacy statement.
