Sony Pulled GTA 6 Parody Game Grand Taking Ages From the PlayStation Store — but It’s Now Cleared for Release on Steam

The creators of the controversial Grand Theft Auto 6 parody, Grand Taking Ages, have successfully launched the game on Steam after Sony removed it from the PlayStation Store. The game, a parody management simulator about running a game development studio, initially faced removal due to its use of AI-generated assets and its close resemblance to Rockstar's GTA franchise.

Developer Violarte made significant changes to appease Valve, including removing the "VI" from the title, updating the logo, descriptions, and visuals to better distinguish it from GTA 6. While the game still utilizes AI for voiceovers (as disclosed on the Steam page, adhering to Steam's AI guidelines), the revised presentation successfully secured Steam's approval.

The updated Steam page description reads: "Coming Soon Since Forever! Start your game dev journey in mom's garage! Battle angry fans, dodge ruthless journalists, and perfect the art of 'creative' deadlines. Survive on pizza and energy drinks while building your dream studio into... a slightly better garage!"

Violarte employed a different strategy with Valve, proactively engaging with their team to discuss the game's concept before submission. This proactive approach, contrasted with their initial PlayStation Store submission, ensured alignment with Valve's guidelines. The developer cited other GTA parodies, like "Grand Theft Hamlet," as examples of acceptable parody within the genre.

Despite the Steam success, Violarte aims to reinstate Grand Taking Ages on the PlayStation Store, believing the implemented changes address Sony's previous concerns. They've submitted a request highlighting the Steam approval as evidence of the game's revised nature.

The contrasting experiences with Sony and Valve highlight the differing approaches to content curation. While Sony's process faced scrutiny following the initial removal, Steam's more open policy is well-established. The incident underscores the growing presence of AI-generated content within the gaming landscape. Rockstar's GTA 6, meanwhile, remains slated for a Fall 2025 release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
