Virtua Fighter Returns: New In-Engine Footage Unveiled

Sega has treated fans to a fresh look at the upcoming Virtua Fighter installment, marking the franchise's highly anticipated return after nearly two decades of relative inactivity. This new entry, the first entirely new game in almost 20 years, is being developed by Sega's own Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio.

The last major Virtua Fighter release was the Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown remaster (2021), itself a refreshed version of a previous update. While the franchise saw a surprise physical release of Virtua Fighter 2 and Ultimate Showdown is slated for a Steam launch in January 2025, this new footage offers the first substantial glimpse into a completely original game.

First shown at NVIDIA's CES 2025 keynote, the short video showcases a meticulously choreographed fight sequence. While not actual gameplay, the in-engine graphics provide a strong indication of the game's visual style. This new Virtua Fighter departs from its earlier, hyper-stylized polygonal aesthetic, aiming for a more realistic look that blends elements reminiscent of Tekken 8 and Street Fighter 6. The trailer features Akira, the franchise's iconic character, sporting new outfits, a departure from his classic bandana and spiky hair.

Development is being overseen by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, also responsible for the Virtua Fighter 5 remaster (alongside Sega AM2) and the acclaimed Yakuza series. The studio is also working on Sega's announced Project Century.

While details remain scarce, project director Riichirou Yamada's earlier statements hint at Sega's ambitious vision for the game. However, Sega's commitment to revitalizing the Virtua Fighter brand is clear, as evidenced by the ongoing releases of promotional materials. As Sega President and COO Shuji Utsumi declared during the VF Direct 2024 livestream: "Virtua Fighter is finally back!"
