SEGA is bringing the immensely popular Virtua Fighter series to Steam for the first time with Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. This forthcoming remaster is the fifth main installment of the 18-year-old game, Virtua Fighter 5. The precise release date remains undisclosed, but SEGA hinted at a winter launch.

Despite releasing multiple versions, SEGA touted Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O as "the definitive remaster of the classic 3D fighter." The game features rollback netcode, guaranteeing seamless online gameplay even on less-than-ideal connections. It also boasts 4K graphics, updated high-resolution textures, and a boosted 60 fps framerate, resulting in exceptionally smooth and stunning visuals.

Players can select from classic modes such as Ranked Match, Arcade, Training, and Versus. The developers also incorporated two new modes. The first offers the capacity to create "custom online tournaments and leagues with up to 16 players," while the Spectator Mode enables viewing of other players and learning skillful maneuvers or novel techniques to overcome opponents.

Audience reception of Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O’s YouTube trailer is quite favorable, despite it being the fifth installment. One enthusiast declared, "Am I going to buy another copy of Virtua Fighter 5? You damn right." Others also appreciate the game's PC release. However, some fans still desire VF6. "Once the world is a radioactive wasteland with no internet after WW3, Sega will finally release VF6," a fan commented.

Previously Anticipated As Virtua Fighter 6

Initially hinted earlier this month via an interview with VGC, many fans anticipated that SEGA is developing Virtua Fighter 6. In the same interview, Justin Scarpone, SEGA’s global head of transmedia, mentioned that "we have a collection of titles in development right now that fall into that legacy category, which we announced last year at The Game Awards; Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Streets of Rage, Shinobi, and we have another Virtua Fighter being developed."

However, this anticipation was dispelled as Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O was posted on Steam on November 22 with upgraded visuals, new modes, and the integration of rollback netcode.

The Return of the Classic Fighting Game

Virtua Fighter 5 launched on SEGA Lindbergh arcade systems in July 2006, later arriving on PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2007. J6, or Judgement 6, invited top fighters globally to the Fifth World Fighting Tournament. The initial game featured 17 fighters; subsequent releases, including Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O, boast 19 playable characters.

Following its debut, Virtua Fighter 5 received updates and remakes to enhance the original and expand its reach. These include:

⚫︎ Virtua Fighter 5 R (2008)
⚫︎ Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown (2010)
⚫︎ Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown (2021)
⚫︎ Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O (2024)

Sporting enhanced visuals and modern features, Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O remains thrilling for VF enthusiasts.
