6 ImagesThese five cards form a "cycle," unified by a shared design theme spread across each of Magic's colors. They are all affordable, common-rarity creatures, each linked to one of Tarkir's three-color clans and featuring an ability that converts mana into a color from that clan.

“Three-color limited environments require robust mana fixing across all rarities,” explains Wizards of the Coast Senior Game Designer Adam Prosak. “We aimed to ensure many decks could access mana fixing, so we developed numerous designs to address mana issues. These creatures allow players to advance their board presence while simultaneously improving their mana base - a strategic advantage over designs like tapped lands, which only provide mana and may cause you to fall behind.”

"We wanted to depict the evolution of the clans since their last appearance. From the action-oriented Jeskai monks, the Temur's mystical Whispers, the Sultai's protective Nagas, the versatile Mardu military prowess, to the Abzan clerics reviving lost kin trees, each card tells a story."

One critique of recent Magic sets has been an overreliance on thematic gimmicks, even when revisiting familiar planes. Tarkir: Dragonstorm, however, stands out with its focused return to Tarkir. Senior Worldbuilding Art Director Forrest Schehl notes that feedback is crucial to Wizards of the Coast, but the overarching theme for Tarkir was set well before recent sets like Murders at Karlov Manor. "Our vision was to blend Dragons and Clans in a fresh way, with Dragonstorms playing a central role in shaping this return. Lauren and I felt the pressure to get it right from the start, aiming to craft the next chapter of this cherished plane with authenticity and depth."

Tarkir: Dragonstorm is now available for preorder, with the set set to release in both paper and digital formats on April 11. In-store prerelease events will begin on April 4.
