The Best Switch Visual Novels and Adventure Games in 2024 – From Fata Morgana and VA-11 Hall-A to Famicom Detective Club and Gnosia

Jan 26,25

Following my exploration of the Switch's top party games in 2024, the exceptional release of Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club inspired me to compile a list of the best visual novels and adventure games currently available on the Switch. This list encompasses both pure visual novels and adventure games, as some titles blend genres. The selection spans various regions and release years, offering a diverse range of experiences. The order is entirely arbitrary.

Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club ($49.99) + Famicom Detective Club: The Two-Case Collection

Nintendo's 2021 remakes of the Famicom Detective Club games were a revelation. Now, in 2024, Emio – The Smiling Man arrives as a stunning new entry, both physically and digitally. It's a lavishly produced title that feels like a genuine continuation of the series, though this might not appeal to everyone. The ending is surprisingly impactful, fully justifying its M rating. Unexpectedly, it's become a top contender on my 2024 games list. Download the demo today!

For those preferring to play the originals first, the Famicom Detective Club: The Two-Case Collection is readily available. Fans of classic adventure game design and gameplay will find much to love.

VA-11 Hall-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action ($14.99)

A repeat appearance on my "best of" lists, VA-11 Hall-A deserves its place. Its compelling story, memorable music, striking aesthetic, and especially its characters make it a standout. It's equally at home on the Switch and receives my unqualified recommendation. Whether you're a point-and-click aficionado or not, mix some drinks and change some lives.

The House in Fata Morgana: Dreams of the Revenants Edition ($39.99)

The definitive edition of a personal favorite, The House in Fata Morgana is a pure visual novel masterpiece. This edition includes the original game and substantial additions. Its success on the Switch, where it truly shines, is well-deserved. This gothic horror experience will leave a lasting impression, complemented by its exceptional soundtrack.

Coffee Talk Episode 1+2 ($12.99 + $14.99)

While sold separately digitally and physically, the North American Switch bundle allows me to treat Coffee Talk Episodes 1 and 2 as a single entry. Though not reaching the heights of VA-11 Hall-A, they offer a relaxing experience with a charming story, perfect pixel art, and a great soundtrack. Coffee lovers and those who appreciate engaging characters will find this a delightful choice.

Type-Moon's Visual Novels: Tsukihime, Fate/stay night, and Mahoyo (Variable)

This entry encompasses Tsukihime, Fate/stay night Remastered, and Witch on the Holy Night (Mahoyo). These are lengthy but rewarding visual novels. Fate/stay night serves as an excellent introduction to the genre, while Tsukihime's remake is highly recommended. Witch on the Holy Night follows as a strong third choice.

PARANORMASIGHT: The Seven Mysteries of Honjo ($19.99)

Square Enix's PARANORMASIGHT surprised me with its high quality. The narrative, presentation, and even some meta-narrative elements are exceptional. It's a fantastic mystery adventure game with memorable characters, impressive art, and engaging mechanics.

Gnosia ($24.99)

Described as a sci-fi social deduction RPG, Gnosia is more accurately a hybrid of adventure and visual novel elements. The core gameplay involves identifying the Gnosia and voting them into cold sleep. Despite some RNG-related issues, it's a fantastic experience. Its appeal might be limited, but it remains a pleasant surprise within the genre.

Steins;Gate Series (Variable)

Spike Chunsoft's Steins;Gate releases, particularly Steins;Gate Elite, are crucial for introducing newcomers to visual novels. While I await the original Steins;Gate, Elite is an easy recommendation for anime fans. Playing the other Steins;Gate titles is best done after experiencing the original story.

AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES and nirvanA Initiative (Variable)

The collaboration between Zero Escape creator Kotaro Uchikoshi and No More Heroes artist Yusuke Kozaki resulted in two exceptional adventure games. While the absence of Zero Escape on Switch is regrettable, the AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES games are well worth the full price.

NEEDY STREAMER OVERLOAD ($19.99)

This adventure game with multiple endings oscillates between disturbing horror and heartwarming moments. It follows a young streamer's daily life. It's unforgettable.

Ace Attorney Series (Variable)

Capcom has brought the entire Ace Attorney series to Switch. The series is beloved for a reason, and the availability of the entire collection on a single handheld is a significant achievement. The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles serves as an excellent entry point.

Spirit Hunter: Death Mark, NG, and Death Mark II (Variable)

The Spirit Hunter trilogy blends horror adventure and visual novel elements with a striking art style. While the grotesque imagery might not appeal to all, the excellent localization and storytelling are noteworthy.

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim ($59.99)

A blend of adventure and real-time strategy, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim is a sci-fi masterpiece. Its replayability is enhanced by the Switch's OLED screen in handheld mode. This is a must-play title.

This list exceeds a typical top 10, reflecting my desire to include all the titles I highly recommend. If you have suggestions, please share them!
