Sony's Unveiled Los Angeles PlayStation Studio: A New AAA Title in the Works

A recently surfaced job posting confirms Sony Interactive Entertainment's establishment of a new AAA game studio in Los Angeles, California. This marks the 20th first-party studio under the PlayStation umbrella, adding to an already impressive roster of acclaimed developers. The studio is currently shrouded in secrecy but is reportedly developing a high-profile, original AAA IP for the PS5.

The news has generated significant excitement among PlayStation fans, who eagerly anticipate updates on upcoming titles from established studios like Santa Monica Studio, Naughty Dog, and Insomniac Games. Sony's strategic acquisitions of Housemarque, Bluepoint Games, and Firesprite in recent years have further fueled this anticipation.

Speculation regarding the identity of the new studio's personnel is rife. One theory points to a spin-off team from Bungie, formed following the July 2024 layoffs that saw 155 Bungie employees transition to Sony Interactive Entertainment. This team, reportedly working on Bungie's "Gummybears" incubation project, is a potential candidate for the new Los Angeles studio.

Another strong contender is the team led by Jason Blundell, a veteran Call of Duty developer and co-founder of the now-defunct Deviation Games. Deviation Games was developing a AAA PS5 title before its closure in March 2024, and many of its former employees subsequently joined PlayStation under Blundell's leadership. Given the longer gestation period of Blundell's team, it's considered a likely frontrunner for the new studio.

The nature of the game under development remains unknown, but speculation suggests it could be a continuation or reimagining of Deviation Games' abandoned project. While an official announcement from Sony is likely still some time away, the confirmation of a new first-party studio developing a AAA title is undoubtedly welcome news for PlayStation fans.
