PlayStation Portal Sale: Save 30% on Like-New Handheld

Jan 14,26

The PlayStation Portal launched in November 2023, and since then, I have never seen a discount on a brand-new unit—not even during Sony's Days of Play Sale in June. The good news is you can now grab a used model at a significant discount. Amazon Resale has reduced the price of the "Used: Like New" PlayStation Portal to $140.41 when you apply the 25% off coupon automatically added at checkout. Amazon Resale is Amazon's official channel for pre-owned products, and "Like New" items are typically unused, with only the original packaging showing minor wear. These purchases are backed by Amazon’s 30-day return policy, making this a much safer option than buying a used controller from Facebook Marketplace.

Sony's PlayStation Portal is a handheld gaming accessory designed for the PS5, resembling a split-pad DualSense controller with an 8-inch 1080p LCD screen in the center. It transforms your PS5 into a portable system by streaming games directly from your console at up to 60 frames per second. The controller includes the same features as the standard DualSense, offering haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and a touchscreen that replaces the controller's touchpad. The Portal even lets you stream games while away from home, as long as you have access to a fast and reliable internet connection. Just remember—this isn't a standalone gaming device. It's specifically a remote player for the PlayStation 5, so you'll need a PS5 to use it.

You no longer need to own a PS5 to enjoy gaming on the PlayStation Portal. Instead of only being able to stream titles from a $500 console to a $200 handheld, Sony has introduced a feature that allows gamers to stream directly from the PlayStation Now cloud streaming service. A PS5 is no longer necessary. Portal users can connect either to their console or directly to Sony’s cloud servers (thanks to new quality-of-life beta updates released in April). Choosing the latter option gives you instant access to a catalog of over 120 games, including Ghost of Tsushima, Resident Evil 3 Remake, The Last of Us Part I Remastered, and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Please note: accessing this service requires the highest tier of PlayStation Plus, but at $18 per month, it’s a more appealing deal than purchasing every new game individually.

It's worth pointing out that the PlayStation Portal is not the only option for streaming PS5 games over Wi-Fi at home. You can replicate its functionality using the PS Remote Play app on a smartphone or even on other handheld systems like the Steam Deck. However, setup is more complex, and you'll lose access to certain DualSense features.

PlayStation Portal Review by Seth Macy

"I went into the PlayStation Portal experience with a healthy dose of skepticism, but it ended up being the most surprisingly enjoyable device I've ever tested. It delivers a far better experience than using a phone with an attached controller, and performance exceeded my expectations. I truly appreciate the freedom it gives me to play my PS5 from anywhere with solid Wi-Fi—especially when my family is using the TV to (somewhat ironically) play the Nintendo Switch. Keep in mind this is not a standalone product: it works exclusively with a PlayStation 5. The two biggest limitations that prevent the Portal from being an exceptional device are its inability to connect to Wi-Fi networks that require a browser login and its lack of Bluetooth audio support. Even so, it remains the best available option for PlayStation Remote Play. If not for those two puzzling omissions, I’d recommend it as an essential accessory for every PS5 owner who enjoys handheld gaming—or simply needs to share the living room TV."
