Ryan Reynolds Proposes R-Rated Star Wars to Disney

Ryan Reynolds has revealed that he pitched an R-rated Star Wars project to Disney, though it remains uncertain whether it will come to fruition. During a recent appearance on The Box Office Podcast, the Deadpool actor discussed his idea, emphasizing that the R-rating would serve as a "Trojan Horse for emotion" rather than just being vulgar. Reynolds suggested using lesser-known characters to explore deeper emotional narratives, questioning why studios hesitate to take such risks.

Despite his enthusiasm for the concept, Reynolds clarified that he wouldn't want to star in the project, stating, "I’m not saying I would want to be in it; that would be a bad fit." Instead, he expressed interest in contributing behind the scenes as a producer or writer, highlighting the potential for surprise and scarcity in the Star Wars universe, even with the extensive content available on Disney+.

Reynolds is no stranger to R-rated success, having been a key figure in three of the top-five highest-grossing R-rated films: Deadpool, Deadpool 2, and Deadpool & Wolverine. The latter, a collaboration with Hugh Jackman, remains the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, earning over $1.3 billion according to Box Office Mojo.

While Reynolds continues his work with Marvel, including reportedly pushing for a Deadpool and X-Men movie, his Star Wars pitch might take a while to materialize. In the meantime, fans can look forward to other Star Wars projects, such as Star Wars: Starfighter, directed by Shawn Levy, a frequent collaborator of Reynolds, and starring Ryan Gosling.
